Arabia’s Moomin Mug Green Comics is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug that was produced from 1990 to 1993. The same series also includes a plate that is part of a collector’s plate set, as well as a 0.4-litre mug.

The mug was produced both with the crown stamp and with the TEEMA base stamp, and it is specifically the examples with the TEEMA stamp that are rare, sought-after and valuable. Labelled examples may not have survived at all, because production ended quite early, but the mug was definitely made in Finland. Green Comics is the first themed Moomin mug, and at the same time the first themed mug that was discontinued.

Tove Slotte commented on the first mugs like this:
“In my own opinion, the pale yellow and blue mugs are more successful and more balanced than the comic mugs. Consumers probably agreed, because the comic mugs were discontinued after a few years, and mugs in that style were not made later.”

Perhaps that is why the comic mugs are so valuable today, because the production quantity remained small. This was also the first themed mug model to be discontinued.

On Moomin mugs from the 1990s, small production marks are often easier to spot than on newer mugs, and age has also brought signs of use to many examples. That is why there are very few Green Comics mugs in the Supergood category. A completely clean example with no signs of use and no factory flaws is exceptional for mugs from this period. Even mugs in the Just fine category can, in the case of 1990s mugs, show slightly more signs of use than newer Moomin mugs in the same category.

The mug is known as one of the most sought-after and valuable Moomin mugs of the 1990s. The decoration is based on Tove Jansson’s comic Moomin Begins a New Life, and Tove Slotte adapted the comic to the mug so that the original drawings remained almost unchanged. Only the speech bubbles were removed, which makes the overall design more faithful than usual to the original comic.

In the comic-style decoration, Moominpappa is shown as an adventurous character climbing a tree for a picnic. Together with the Rose Comics mug, Green Comics belongs to the rare Moomin mugs on which a whole comic strip has been used. That is exactly what makes the mug such an exceptionally recognizable and distinctive part of Arabia’s early Moomin mug history.

Green Comics was released at the same time as the Blue and Rose mugs in 1990. Before production, colour tests were carried out on these first three mugs with fired paints in several different shades, from which one was eventually chosen for production. The comic mugs were made only for a few years, and this style was not continued later. It is precisely the short production period and the smaller-than-usual production quantity that have helped make this mug so highly valued.
