Moomin Mug: Journey Finnair-100 (2023) (0.3L) is one of the special edition mugs of 2023. In 2023, Finnair—one of the world’s oldest airlines—celebrated its 100th anniversary. Finnair, like Finmug, is a Finnish company. To mark this milestone, Finnair and Arabia jointly created the Journey Moomin mug. This special mug was launched on 9 October 2023 and was available in limited quantities only in selected stores. Many also know it as the Finnair Moomin mug.

Originally, the mug was sold in an individual cardboard box that highlights the beauty of the illustration. Unfortunately, the Finnair mug’s boxes are somewhat low in quality, which means the blue color of the packaging can rub off—especially onto the base of the mug. The color can be removed by rubbing with a finger or an eraser. The box is the same type (with a different design) as for the Sea Breeze Moomin mug, but not as strong and durable as the boxes used for the Moomin’s Day mugs from 2018 and 2021.

The price of the Journey Finnair-100 mug rose immediately after release because the batch was very limited (Arabia does not publish exact quantities). The mug sold out on the Moomin Arabia website within minutes, and it wasn’t available for long at Stockmann or even at the airport.

The artwork on the “Journey” mug draws inspiration from Tove Jansson’s story The Exploits of Moominpappa (1950), which follows young Moominpappa’s adventures with his friends Hodgkins, the Muddler, and the Joxter. The scenes evoke voyages aboard the Oshun Oxtra (Ocean Orchestra) and encounters with characters such as the Groke, the Niblings, and Edward the Booble. Finnair’s promise of freedom to travel and discover the world is reflected in these images.

Finnair’s centenary “Journey” mug is the first joint project by Arabia’s design team and the new illustrator, Parvati Pillai. The mug stands out with its dark palette and adventurous design. We see Moominpappa and his friends making their way through the Garden of Surprises toward the Autocrat’s festivities. Inside the mug there’s a captivating hot-air balloon motif referencing Jansson’s original cover. “Journey” carries a By Arabia backstamp without a year. The mug is available in the 0.3 L size.
