Arabia’s Moomin mug Winternight Glow is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug produced in 2026. The same Winternight Glow collection also includes a set of two 10.5 cm mini plates. The mug has a special backstamp referring to the Moomin Museum as well as a 2026 year stamp. It was designed in Finland and, according to the label, made in Thailand. Winternight Glow is the second mug created in collaboration between Moomin Arabia and the Moomin Museum in Tampere. It was preceded by the Moominvalley mug released in 2017, which also features a special backstamp connected to the museum.

The illustration is based on Tove Jansson’s novel Moominland Midwinter from 1957. Moomintroll wakes unexpectedly in the middle of the family’s winter hibernation and encounters The Groke on a cold winter night. As The Groke approaches, her icy presence extinguishes both Moomintroll’s oil lamp and the large bonfire built on the mountain to keep the darkness and cold away. Moomintroll is frightened, but Too-ticky helps him understand that The Groke is not evil. Behind her intimidating appearance is a deeply lonely creature longing for warmth and companionship.

The Groke has an unusually prominent role in Winternight Glow. She stands near the hurricane lamp, while the scene gradually shifts from fear towards understanding. The heart of the story is not the light itself, but the fact that Moomintroll has come to meet her. Through this encounter, the illustration touches on loneliness, prejudice, kindness and compassion.

Winternight Glow also stands apart from most other Moomin mugs because of its artistic style. Instead of being adapted from the familiar line drawings found in the Moomin books, the design is based on an original gouache painting by Tove Jansson. The painterly surface, deep winter-night colours and glow surrounding The Groke give the mug a distinctive appearance.

Winternight Glow is the second collaboration mug by Moomin Arabia and the Moomin Museum. The first was the Moominvalley mug released in 2017 to celebrate the renovated museum, and it too was based on a gouache painting by Tove Jansson. Located in Tampere, the Moomin Museum is the world’s only museum dedicated entirely to the Moomins, and its collection is built around original Moomin artwork donated by Tove Jansson in 1986.
