Arabia’s Moomin Mug The Office is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug that was produced from 1996 to 2002. The same series also includes a plate that is part of a collector’s plate set. This mug was produced only with the crown stamp, and examples from 1996 also have the year mark on the base. Mugs that still retain the original Made in Finland label are rare, sought-after and valuable, because the mug’s Finnish production and considerable age already make it interesting to collectors. It is highly unusual for a mug from the 1990s to still have its original label, so the price of a labelled mug may be many times higher than that of an unlabelled example.

On Moomin mugs from the 1990s, small production marks are often easier to spot than on newer mugs, and over the years many examples have also developed signs of use. That is why there are very few The Office mugs in the Supergood category. Completely clean examples with no signs of use and no factory flaws are exceptional for mugs from this period. Even mugs in the Just fine category may, in Moomin mugs from this era, show slightly more wear than newer mugs in the same category.

The yellow The Office mug is considered one of the most eventful and at the same time one of the most well-liked Moomin mugs of the 1990s. The decoration brings together material from an exceptionally large number of different works, which makes the overall design lively and detailed. The images on the mug are based on Tove and Lars Jansson’s comics The Conscientious Moomins, Moomin Winter, Moomin Builds a House and Moomin Begins a New Life, as well as on Lars Jansson’s comic Moomin’s Lamp.

The composition of the decoration was created by Tove Slotte. The different scenes are separated from one another with scissors and paintbrushes, echoing the look of the original comics and giving the mug its recognizable rhythm. Tove Slotte has also recalled that the scissors theme was inspired precisely by the scissors seen in Tove Jansson’s comics. This makes Moomin Mug The Office especially interesting both for its decoration and for its place in the history of 1990s Moomin mugs.
