Arabia’s Moomin Mug Rose Comics is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug that was produced from 1990 to 1993. The same series also includes a plate that is part of a collector’s plate set, as well as a 0.4-litre mug.

The mug was produced both with the crown stamp and with the TEEMA base stamp, and it is specifically the examples with the TEEMA stamp that are rare, sought-after and valuable. Labelled versions may not exist at all, because production already ended early in 1993, but the mug was certainly made in Finland. Together with the Green Comics mug, Rose Comics is among the most valuable Moomin mugs of the 1990s.

Tove Slotte commented on the first mugs as follows:
“In my own opinion, the pale yellow and blue mugs are more successful and more balanced than the comic mugs. Consumers probably agreed, because the comic mugs were discontinued after a few years, and no mugs in that style were made later.”

Perhaps this is why the comic mugs are so valuable today, because the production quantity remained small. This was also the first themed mug model to be discontinued.

On Moomin mugs from the 1990s, small production marks are often easier to spot than on newer mugs, and age has also brought signs of use to many examples. That is why there are very few Rose Comics mugs in the Supergood category. A completely clean example with no signs of use and no factory flaws is exceptional for mugs from this period. Even mugs in the Just fine category can, in the case of 1990s mugs, show slightly more signs of use than newer Moomin mugs in the same category.

The decoration on the mug is based on Tove Jansson’s comic Moomintroll Falls in Love, and the composition for the mug was created by Tove Slotte. The scenes show Moomintroll trying to impress Snorkmaiden, and the whole design genuinely moves forward like a comic strip from one scene to the next. Rose Comics is therefore an exceptional Moomin mug, because together with the Green Comics mug it belongs to the rare models in which an entire comic strip has been adapted onto the mug.

Rose Comics was released at the same time as the Green and Blue mugs in 1990, and colour tests were carried out on these first three mugs with fired paints in several different shades before the final production colour was chosen. The mug was designed in the same themed spirit as the first Teema-style Green mug, but its production run remained fairly short. It is precisely the short production period, the small production quantity and the distinctive comic-strip decoration that have made Moomin Mug Rose Comics one of the most sought-after Moomin mugs of the 1990s.
