Arabia’s Moomin Mug Painting Moomins, Blue is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug that was produced from 1990 to 1996, and it is now discontinued. Even though the mug’s label says only Blue, the mug is commonly known as Painting Moomins. The same series also includes a plate that is part of a collector’s plate set, as well as a 0.4-litre Moomin mug. This mug is also special because it is considered the first themed Moomin mug.

The mug has the regular crown stamp, and no year-stamped versions of this model were made, because year stamps were introduced only later. The mugs were made in Finland, so examples that still have the Made in Finland label are rare, sought-after and valuable.

On Moomin mugs from the 1990s, small production marks are often easier to spot than on newer mugs, and age also brings signs of use to many examples. That is why mugs in the Supergood category are extremely rare in this model. A completely flawless and practically unused example is an exception. Even mugs in the Just fine category can, with a mug from this period, show slightly more signs of use than newer Moomin mugs in the same category.

In the illustration, Moominpappa and Moomintroll are busily painting, and the overall design has a cheerful and playful energy. One of the best-known motifs in the decoration, the painting Moomin, comes from the logo image used on the covers of the comic books, which also appears on the base of the mug next to the Arabia stamp. The other images are based on Tove Jansson’s comic strip Moomintroll at Sea, the novel Moominpappa at Sea, and Lars Jansson’s comic strip Moomintroll and Art. The composition of the decoration was created by Tove Slotte.

Painting Moomins belongs to the very first Moomin mugs tested in different colours. In 1990, the green, blue and pink mugs were released at the same time, and colour tests were carried out on them with fired paints in several different shades before the final production colour was chosen. This makes the Painting Moomins mug an important part of Arabia’s early Moomin mug history.

This moomin mug has also been checked by Finmug

Separately, in good lighting. Our moomin mugs come from private individuals as well as directly from the factory. Each moomin mug is checked before it is sold here in our online shop. We check the moomin mug to see what kind of base stamp and sticker it has and what condition the mug is in. We also do a condition check on mugs with label, because often Arabia's 1-quality products have aesthetic factory defects. Finmug is the only online shop where mugs are also checked for factory defects. Just for you.
