Hobgoblin Moomin mug was released in 2018 and belongs to a set that also includes a bowl and a plate with the same artwork. The Hobgoblin is a character many remember from the 1990s animation, and his long-awaited own mug was a joyful addition for collectors. Although the official label name is “Hobgoblin Lilac,” it’s commonly called just “Hobgoblin,” since no other 0.3 L Hobgoblin mugs have appeared yet. (He does appear on the 0.4 L alphabet mug “G”.)
Thanks to the rich, dark-toned illustration, small factory flaws—like tiny black dots—don’t show easily, so most pieces fall into the Supergood category. Designed in Finland; mugs with a “Thailand” label are made in Thailand. Versions with the “MOOMIN 75” gold backstamp are especially rare and valuable. Typically the base carries the newer “By Arabia” backstamp. Despite its collectability, the mug is affordably priced and great for everyday coffee moments.

The Hobgoblin mug’s elegant, mysterious artwork is drawn entirely from Tove Jansson’s novel Finn Family Moomintroll (1948). The Hobgoblin is shown flying on his black panther through space among the planets; on the other side he rests in a mountain landscape beneath the stars. The mug’s exceptional magenta-and-lilac hue has earned much praise, even if the Hobgoblin isn’t everyone’s favourite character.
