Purple Hemulen – Moomin mug was in production from 2004 to 2013, with a matching bowl and plate in the same series. The product label says only “Hemulen”, but collectors often say “Purple Hemulen” or “Lilac Hemulen”. Although many purple Hemulen mugs were made in Finland, which usually boosts value, production volume was relatively high, so a Made in Finland label Hemulen is not as valuable as some other character mugs.
The Hemulen Moomin mug is a favorite for many collectors because the character itself draws special interest. Released in 2004, it remained the only Hemulen character mug for a long time until Yellow Hemulen arrived in 2023. The purple Hemulen is considered fairly valuable due to limited availability.

In the artwork Hemulen enjoys his favorite pastime with a magnifying glass, studying insects. The imagery comes from the comic Moomintroll and the Sense of Duty (#16) and the novel Comet in Moominland. In the original comic Hemulen sits at a desk writing, but for the mug the scene was adapted so he examines insects on the tabletop. A fun detail is that Hemulen, like Stinky, has a name that is nearly the same across languages, though not in Finnish.
