Christmas Surprise Moomin mug is the 2009 winter seasonal mug, whose popularity among collectors has grown over the years. It is valuable especially because production was fairly limited and the artwork is well liked. Unusually, the Christmas Surprise series includes no companion items. On the dark blue solid background, tiny factory flaws (like small black dots) are clearly visible, which makes pieces graded Supergood even more valuable.

The 2009 Christmas Surprise was the last of four winter seasonal mugs released with a dark blue background. The Arabia crown backstamp does not state the country of manufacture, but the mug was designed in Finland.

The illustration, skilfully combined by Tove Slotte, draws from several sources: Moomintroll, Moominpappa, and Moominmamma come from Tove and Lars Jansson’s comic #19 Moomin Winter; the energetic Hemulen is from Tove Jansson’s novel Moominland Midwinter; and Little My comes from the songbook Visor från Mumindalen. The value of this seasonal mug has already risen over time, and the trend appears set to continue.
