Arabia’s Moomin Mug Christmas Greetings is a 0.3-litre Moomin mug that was produced from 1997 to 2002. The same series also includes a plate that is part of collector’s plate set 2/10, as well as a wall plate. Although Christmas Greetings is considered the first winter-themed Moomin mug, it is probably still only the second most valuable winter mug after Millennium.

All Christmas Greetings mugs were made in Finland, but examples that still retain the original Made in Finland label are rare, sought-after and valuable. The first mugs were produced in 1997, and they carry the year stamp from that year. Later mugs have a crown stamp on the base without a year stamp, so the year-stamped version is slightly older and also more appreciated in the eyes of collectors.

On Moomin mugs from the 1990s, small production marks are often easier to spot than on newer mugs, and age also brings signs of use to many examples. That is why there are very few Christmas Greetings mugs in the Supergood category. Mugs in this category show no signs of use and no visible factory flaws.

In the illustration, the Moomins are riding in a reindeer-drawn sleigh, with parcels travelling along in the middle of a festive winter scene. Christmas Greetings already stood out from 1990s Moomin mugs when it was first released, because its background is not just a plain single-colour surface and the decoration does not follow quite the same collage-like look as many mugs from the same period. The background colouring follows the mood of the illustration and makes the overall design more vivid than usual.

The mug’s decoration combines Tove Jansson’s original illustrations with Tove Slotte’s design work. Motifs were selected from Tove Jansson’s Peace March postcard illustration created for UNICEF in 1981, as well as from The Fir Tree and the comic Dangerous Winter. Together these elements create a warm and festive whole that makes Moomin Mug Christmas Greetings one of the most recognizable special mugs of the 1990s.
